So you’ve bought a new house – congrats! Here are some things that might help make life a bit easier with the move.
First, have you sold your previous house? If not, we can help with that!
We do the full process, from sales, bonds, transfers, contracts and any legal requirements that might come into play.
So here we go!
- Confirm occupation dates with parties involved, also your landlord if you’re renting
- Make an inventory checklist that you can tick as you go to make sure you’ve done everything you wanted to, and make special note at items that can only be done during business hours
- Find a removal service if you’re not moving yourself
- Get some packing boxes, bubble wrap, old newspapers and a marker to write on them
- Consolidate your stuff and start packing! Time to sort out everything you didn’t get to the last few years.
- Label boxes
- Make a note of meter readings
- Disconnect and connect all utilities
- Pay outstanding bills
- Change locks if necessary
- Emergency kit for new home
- Someone to look after the kids on the moving date
- Make sure the new property is enclosed for pets, so you don’t lose a loved one while you’re busy
- Arrange for pest control if necessary
- Arrange cleaners to clean the house if you’re not doing it yourself
- Insurance arrangements, cancelling the old and starting the new
- Arrange for keys (and spare keys) of both properties to be handed over
- Update your address details
- Redirect your mail
- Cancel or redirect other regular deliveries
- If it’s a PAYG electricity meter, make sure you have access and that there’s enough electricity loaded to get you through the first night at least
- Pack an overnight bag for that first night. Remember your phone/laptop chargers, toiletries, some cups/paper-plates/cutlery, and some food if you’re not getting take-aways. Remember pillows and blankets.
- Appoint a good transport attorney (remember, law states that it’s the sellers choice, not the agent or the buyer!)
- Unpack and start making your new home cozy!
